For Immediate Release
January 13, 2026
Beardy’s & Okemasis’ Cree Nation, Treaty 6 – Beardy’s & Okemasis’ Cree Nation convened a Special Members’ Assembly on January 6, 2026, at the Veterans’ Memorial Hall to ratify proposed amendments to the 2016 BOCN Election Act.
With a successful turnout of 175 registered members in attendance, members moved, seconded, and voted by majority to approve the amendments thereby taking into immediate effect the 2026 BOCN Election Act.
The vote was conducted by show of hands, with votes counted and second-counted for accuracy.
Chief and Council extend their sincere gratitude to the Governance Committee for their tireless efforts in leading this important work. The Governance Committee held two prior readings of the Election Act, during which members’ suggestions and feedback were actively received and considered. Following these readings, the proposed amendments were carefully deliberated by the Governance Committee and reviewed through legal expertise for recommendations.
The work, in its entirety, remained band-member led, recognizing that Beardy’s & Okemasis’ Cree Nation is fully capable of governing its own affairs and shaping its laws on its own terms.
Leadership thanks each member who contributed their input and participated in strengthening this living document. The amended Election Act reflects the collective voice and sovereignty of the Nation which will guide BOCN elections for years to come.

BOCN electors will now elect 8 councillors instead of 6.
Electronic voting is now an option for general elections.
